More love for Flaiginbar!

From a post by Dbcooper....

"
Hi all, it's Dbcooper here again. I'm just posting to say that I don't approve of all the Teaming that's been going on in 10-19 WSG. Its a sad day when some of the better twinks, such as Flaiginbar, Perix etc. have to team to get things done...."

Of course, the rest of the post makes absolutely no sense.... but love is love. Yay, Flaiginbar!

Sucking Chest Wound, or, A Bad Day in the FR

I don't mind playing defense all the time. It is not nearly as exciting as offense, but I"m cool with free safety pwn'ing the wide receiver. (Can you tell I miss football? I hate baseball.) I don't expect a lot of acclaim when I lay the fear on, or the DOTs, and watch as the hunter or rogue or warrior or even the damned mage gets the final blow on a guy I've brought to his knees. I"m even okay with that.

However, yesterday I had a BG experience that might put me off BGs for a while. It was probably exacerbated by the fact that it followed the beautiful run we had with Eric running us on Skype. That was awesome. THis was whatever the opposite of that is, perhaps Sucking Chest Wound.

It started out well enough. Three or four of us were on D, and we were handling all the crap jumping down from the balcony. We were handling the rogue who hung out around our empty FR (flag room) waiting for the flag to be returned to the base so he could step in and sweep it up and run. This is a common and not-too-shabby strategy when you fnd yourself playing against a group that seems to feel an empty FR warrants no guarding. THey seem to forget that the second the flag is returned to base, it is available and unguarded. A clever dude can snatch it up and beat it out of there and be to midfield before you have your collective wits about you.

After the first couple of saves, the defensive players all decided they were not going to play defense.

There I was, clothie caster and my kleenex sidekick, Impy, guarding the empty space. The rogue came in and we fought him off. He came back and killed us (mostly via stun; not much I can do when stunned). Then there were two additional "flag returned to base" episodes in which I was pwned by a several Horde members as they accompanied their flag carrier out of our FR. No other peeps from our team were around. I called out for help on defense. When it happened to me the third time and I saw the laughing rogue coming at me yet again, I let the team know I was tired of it and I quit. Not only was I not experiencing any efficacy, I had no kills, just death.

Open Sucking CHest Wound.

I"m still not back in BGs yet. I"m still trying to decide what I want to do next time that happens.

Ok,

I need some help to continue my Enchanting career for SMASH.

I need to get my hands on 3 Arcanite bars and 1 Dense Grinding Stone so that I can make an Arcanite Rod.

I need the Arcanite rod so I can make a Runed Arcanite Rod.
I have the Golden Pearl and the Small Brilliant Shards, what I need is:
8 x Illusion Dust
4 x Greater Eternal Essences
2 x Large Brilliant Shards

Thanks,
Turb

What way should I go for Blacksmithing?

I am currently at lvl 215 for Blacksmithing, I now have a choice with that.

I can either become an Armorsmith or a Weaponsmith

What would my fellow guildies like to see?

What I Learned from Sunday's SMASHing Session

  • Skype communications makes a significant difference. If for nothing else to hear the young hordie in the background grousing about being pwned by Morlo and Smallevil.
  • Waiting 45 minutes for a game to pop, sucks, but going in as a group is totally worth it.
  • The transition from capping a flag to getting back on offense is pretty crucial. I believe that we lost the game because of how, when the Horde finally offed Flaiginbar and capped, they had their whole team in our flag room to pick up the next flag and escort it back for the second cap. After that, we (I) were discombobulated enough about what to do next that we were easy pickings.
  • All of our rogues need to have the minor speed enchant on their boots, and +AGI on everything else. My impression is that AGI > STA for a rogue. Morlo was doing great, however - he and I almost had their flag carrier Chewie on a couple of occasions, but just couldn't pull it off.
  • Early identification of the opponent Priests and Shamans is pretty important. Also, we gotta get a hunter in there to harrass the runners. Love those pets.
  • I'm not completely convinced about the wisdom of having a flag carrier hang around our flag room waiting to cap, instead of taking those three folks and joining them to the hunt for our flag - Flaiginbar, Meranda and Tristar must have withstood five or six concerted pushes, but if we'd had just one of them to help with Chewie, we'd have been able to return our flag. It's a bit risky perhaps, but perhaps the FC becomes the lead hunter, instead of being prey...
  • I know that I should focus on becoming the best mage possible, but the fact that we're just talking about lvl 19s makes me more interested in building up a whole stable of twinks - a mage, a priest, a druid, a hunter... I want to play them all..
  • I hadn't taken the time to build the macros I'd need for the BG, and wished I had. I'll have macros built to broadcast the flag location, and which exit our flag is leaving.
  • Even with the limited amount of playing together, we looked like a group with cohesion. A little more, and the sky's the limit - we might even lose 2-3....

had a great bg experience this morning, with the guildies. eric/clairedelune ran a good show. we were up 1 to 0 for quite a while, in stand off mode, when they finally killed don/flaiginbar, our flag carrier and returned the flag to their base. from there it went downhill, though i'm not sure why.

i have to say that using Skype made a difference, at least for me, though we need to learn to be more explicit about whom we are speaking to when we say things like: jump down, quick!

can't wait for the next time in.

and props to our father/son team for pwning jack sheppard!

A Mod I'm going to experiment with

Battlefield Commander - gives you a visual location of all your players in BG, as well as the way to send map "pings" to others.
Friday night DM run(s):

Starting at 8 p.m. Server Time (7 MDT, 6PDT), Twinkleheal will be escorting folks through DM.

See ya then.
A Very Nice bit of PVP strategy

cribbed from a post by Polynova:

Why do you PvP?

You PvP for Honor. That's all that matters, and you don't get lots of honor from HK farming...you get honor from capturing flags. The faster you capture flags, the more honor you get versus the time you put into it. Please keep this in mind.

Positioning

Many positionings exist, but I'll just give the one that I like the most.
  • One person in the flag room; must have stealth. This person's job is to report to the Mid-Fielders the way the flag is leaving when it is taken. If a rogue, then they can also attempt to sap and/or kill the straglers that will be following the runner for an easier return.
  • Offense. Numbers may vary depending on amount of Defense. Shamans, Druids, Hunters, and Rogues should fall into this category.
  • Mid-Field. The most important position. If you control mid-field, you control the game. All flags must go through mid-field.
More on Offense
  • Get in and get out. Don't worry about fighting in the FR...they're gonna follow you. If you stay, reinforcements WILL come.
  • Rogues, Mages, and Druids can all get the flag out of the FR fast. The best strategy is to enter and leave through the ramp side since most "travel" forms can only be used outside. Have a Druid or Shaman with Imp Ghost Wolf wait outside the 2nd level entrance. Whoever grabs the flag should run to his location and give the flag to the person waiting there.
  • Try to keep those on offense in the same group. That way they can easily see each others health/mana, and can share each others "party-only" buffs.
  • Once someone picks up the flag, stick with them. Don't stop running. Just use CC to keep the Allies off. Even a two second stun can get your carrier out of that targets attack range.
  • Do what you can to keep debuffs off your runner.
Mid-field
  • You can't win games in the FR. Mid-field is the key. Once your man in the FR gives the location that the your flag is leaving from, you have enough time to push in that direction and get it back.
  • Likewise, once your Runner gives the direction that he is leaving with the their flag, your job is to PUSH THE FIGHTING AWAY from the runner. Most of the time, you'll want to go to him to help him out. Sometimes the best way is to avoid compromising his position and push the fighting in the opposite direction. Keep in mind that people are instinctively drawn to the areas with the most fighting. Don't make this area wherever your Runner is. (Exception: Offense fell apart and runner needs heals. Send a Priest for some fear and heal action.)
  • Mid-field strategies: Warriors charge the casters in the back of the opposing pack. They'll panic and the meleers of the opposing force will instinctively attack you. At this point, Hunters need to put their pets on casters. Healers need to keep the Warriors alive. Ranged DPS should focus on Priest, Druids, and Pallies first followed by the squishies. If enemies break from the pack anyone with mass CC should make use of those spells and rogues can mop them up; keeping enemies away from your squishy damage dealers and healers.

Class Purposes
  • Mages use Frost Nova and Sheep as often as you can. Otherwise, stay out of trouble and DPS. Don't foget that you have blink.
  • Warriors use your mass stun, your mass fear, and HAMSTRING EVERYTHING. Be a distraction and pray you get heals. Use charge to get places faster.
  • Shamans: Purge. Frost Shock. Earthbind. And for the love of God, don't forget that you have heal spells. If you die with mana, you're not doing your job.
  • Warlocks: FEAR. Put DoTs on anything with an Energy Bar and use Fear like there is no tomorrow.
  • Rogues: Stuns. Saps. Stuns. Saps. Kill healers on sight.
  • Hunters use traps. Often. Wing Clip anything that gets in melee range and use track when trying to find the opposing flag carrier. Put your pets on any healers you see. Depending on your spec, you have lots of stuns and roots. Use them. Put Scare Beast on your hot bar. Yes, it works on shapeshifted druids.
  • Druids are the best flag runners. They're also really great at "healing and peeling" when supporting a Runner. Use hibernate on druids and pets. Use roots on anything else. Use your animal form stuns as well.
  • Priests: FEAR. Shield. Heal. I know you don't want to be a heal-bot, but it's what you do best. And don't be afraid to MC people either. (This is particularly fun at the AV stormpike bridge, but that's another thread.)
Communication is the Key.
  • If you're running the flag, say either "Ramp" , "Tunnel" or "GY" (Graveyard) to let your Mid-field know which way they need to push for protection or deflection.
  • Make macros with basic information so you don't have to waste time typing. A "click" to say "I'm running ramp." is much easier than actually typing it in when getting away is the priority.
  • If you see someone carrying our flag, please report it, then charge in and slow them down. Updating the position beyond "He went tunnel" is of the essence. "Going out tunnel"..."At Mid-field Center"..."Going their Ramp"...is more likely to get the flag back to your base.
Server Time, just what is Server Time? Well Server Time is the time that the clock in our WoW interface tells us. Normally when you join a new server you are directed to a server in the time zone you specified when you started your account. For me that server was Doomhammer, a Mountain Time Zone server. For whatever reasons, we have ended up on Khaz Modan, a Central Time Server. While most of us live in the Mountain and Pacific time zones, we may grow to where we have Eastern or Central time zone members as well.

So... Just for the sake of clairity from now on lets use Server Time to talk about when events will happen.

OMG, finally a great BG session!

It ran over an hour, maybe two. Flaiginbar was in it, so was Brisingr (I think). This was the first time I actually started to be able to SEE things, to land spells, to move between Hordies and drop a DOT on each. And did I have fun with FEAR. I think at one point I had 3 cows running around banging into each other as the group pwnd them. Of course, then they came looking for me, but by then, I'd been persuaded by an unhappy member of the group to switch to offense. I actually capped a flag!!!!!

Now if I just had some protection. Damn I die fast.

I was reading the Khaz Modan WoW forums last night and ran into the Yscar v. Whira thread. My only thought at the end of this was, "For a guy who I've seen lose 1 game, he sure does complain alot." That would be Yscar btw. Also had my first schooling by NancyCalahan last night. A 19 Hunter and I wailed on her together and still lost... She's good, very good.

Also a shout out to Flaiginbar for making the top 2000 for pvp, 1942 to be exact, first SMASHer since DruidiaJane. If I'm wrong about this let me know, I've been known to be mistaken about things.

So Cainne and Turbulence hit 45 last night; maybe Deliana did as well, I'm not sure as I went to bed as she was still grinding, it's kind of cool to have caught Turb up to these rarified heights of leveling. When we started this adventure on this server, Cainne and Bountyhunter were a good 20 levels ahead of Deliana and me. But the Sunday Morning Group, as I like to think of it, is pretty much all the same level. It isn't often that as a group we have four players around half a level of each other. What's even rarer is that we play well together, although I have to admit that having Twinkleheal with us allows us a lot of flexibility to mess up. Being very squishy I should have died a lot more than I have, but between Deliana and Twink, I live, barely. :)

As Adam moves into his Horde character more and more, we may have to pseudo replace him with another, but it seems like Laura is catching up anyway... So far Smash has been a good guild. We have a lot of the large guild benefits, but without the drama. We may not be the most talkative lot on guild chat, but at least it's a safe haven a place for us to complain about the game, or it's players, with a group of supportive other 'toons. As such, this is pretty much what I wanted from this guild. We have a core of players, some are catching up to the upper levels and you can even get help for elite quests when you need it.

There may be others you want in the guild with us, I'm ok with that, but here is the new guild member policy. An officer can add a player to the guild as the "Wants to Smash" rank. A new guild member must be the "Wants to Smash" rank for at least two weeks. At the end of these two weeks two or more officers must decide if the "Wants to Smash"er should be Promoted to "Like's to Smash" or booted from the Guild.

So far I have kicked one player out of this guild for his dishonesty. I blame myself for pretty much making Eric decide if this player was truly Smash material by himself. My thought process was "This guy wants to PvP let Eric decide." No more, the above policy is the policy we will follow from here on out. The decision to keep a Guildy shouldn't have to fall on one person. That's why I want to have officers discuss new members and how they are doing.

Hey, I'm Serious...

We need to start doing things together. A team requires time and interaction to develop.

Time to schedule some BG action.

SMASH, a month in

So, looking at the SMASH pvp experiment a month into the project, I'm excited by it on a number of levels. It's also turning out to be a significant task, though perhaps that's my obsession/perfectionism speaking.

By my count, there are 13 of us IRL people involved in the project, and it seems to me that perhaps some introductions are appropriate - I overlooked it earlier. Here's who's playing:

  • Eric: EdD student at Pepperdine and IT guy at TVCC. I have two toons in the project, Clairedelune, an 18.5 mage, and Shadowpeeg, a 12 priest. I want to play both in the BGs - Claire is great fun to play for all those frost spells that slow down flag runners. I'm looking forward to getting Shadow levelled up, because I want to see what a fear/shield/healer can do for a team. I also have several other toons in the guild - Peeg is a bank slave, and Slipperypeet is a 225 tailor. My main is Twinkleheal - a 54 holy healbot priest and 300 alchemist. Out of misplaced loyalty, Twink is still in a different guild, Night Shift.
  • Ken: IT guy at TVCC. Ken is my WoW mentor, and he's got several toons of note in the guild - his main is Turbulence, a kickass 44 mage, and Corandra, his BG warlock. Turbulence is the guild enchanter - Ken and I both have been playing the AH hard to generate the funds to skill Turbulence up, with great success. Turbulence is now at 265 enchanting, which is crazy expensive to get to. He can now do Fiery Enchant to weapons, which will be mighty useful for us, and in a move of real fiscal committment, yesterday purchased the recipe for Crusader enchant - for 250g. Needless to say, having a 300 enchanter around in a few weeks is going to be a huge benefit to the guild. If you have any unneeded greens or blues, you can send them to Turbulence for DE as a donation to the cause - he already gave!
  • Kyle: Ken's brother, who lives in the Denver area. He's got two toons in SMASH. His main is Deliana, a 44 Pally, and Turbulent (oh, that's not confusing), a BG hunter. I'm not sure what level Turbulent is at - Kyle has to watch his play time, so I almost always see him Sunday morning before his wife is awake. Good, good paladin to run with, and I believe Kyle, like Ken, played a hordie to 60 on a different server.
  • Scott: IT guy at TVCC. Scott has too many toons to count. His main is a 45ish Druid, Cainne, and his BG toon is Morlo, a 16ish rogue. Morlo's ready to run through the Deadmines for his Westfall Tunic. I've got my eye on a Lifestealing enchant for one of Morlo's blades, but that's a 120g cost, so I'm building my funds a bit more before we do that. We also continue to run Shadowfang Keep in hope that an Assassin's Blade drops (only a 3% drop) for Morlo.
  • Adam: Scott's son. Like Scott, Adam plays a small army of characters. His main is a 45ish hunter, Bountyhunter. I don't know the name of Adam's BG toon, but do know it's a warlock. Adam is mighty knowledgeable about WoW - a voracious reader and a good player.
  • Laura: An IT gal at TVCC. Another serial player, I think that her main is Sarbaris, a warrior in the 30s. Her BG toon is Tristar, a 16 warrior. Laura's the quiet but deadly type - she knows the AH, and she knows the out of the way places of WoW. I know she's been making good money skinning and leatherworking.
  • Terry: An IT gal at TVCC. Terry is Laura's partner in crime, in WoW and IRL. I'm not sure Terry's going to pvp with us or not, but she's in the guild, and I just love it when she and Laura go out as Flotsam and Jetsam (no joke, that's their alt names.) Apparently people stop and give them money when they see the two of them out - the power of their naming cleverness is that great.
  • Randon: An IT guy at TVCC. Randon's main is Fragzilla, a 30s-ish hunter. I'm not sure what the name of his BG toon is, but I know it's a hunter. Randon's got one major issue - he's playing on his brother's account, which means his play time is a little more limited... We're working on him to get his own account, through public shaming...
  • James: EdD student at Pepperdine and my BFF from our master's program. James is a dwarf warrior to the soul, both through his main, Viamedia (60), and Bobnotbob, (17). His toons may not be subtle, but the driving force behind them is. An AH master.
  • Linda: The program director for the EdD program at Pepperdine, and fearless leader for James and me. A small army of toons surround her (true in RL as well) - Hallgrima is her 60 'lock, Saami is a hunter, and Meranda is her 18.5 warlock. I know Hallgrima is an enchanter in the 240s.
  • Don: Linda's husband, and pvp enthusiast. Two toons - Clivenaar, who's in the 20-29 bracket (I think), and Flaiginbar, a 19 pally who's been paving the way for us. I hear he's really ripping it up. Flaiginbar is by far the most advanced in the twinking process - he's got a Crusader enchant on his weapon, and is gradually buffing other parts of his gear. I think we're getting close to the point where only Librams will be remaining, and I don't yet understand the process of procuring and installing libram buffs.
  • Sarah: Linda and Don's daughter. Sarah's got a host of toons - I think her main is still Akmalla, but I'm not sure. As I understand it, Sarah's the queen of social play - you want chat, (and kewl) you want Sarah. I'm not sure what Sarah's BG toon is, or her level of commitment to the project, but no matter, when she joins, she'll be formidable.
  • Zak: An IT student worker at TVCC. He's got a 60 shadow priest on Perrnolde. I believe Zak will be joining us, but I'm not sure what he's intending to play yet.
So that's the group. Now on to where we are - these are the milestones we've hit:

  • Flaiginbar is through all of the levelling process (DM and Seal of Wrynn), and is actively playing in WSG with success. He may need some high level enchants.
  • Clairedelune is through DM and the Seal of Wrynn, and I've been into WSG with her enough to see promise. She needs to hit 19 to get her final gear on, and then we need to do enchants on her gear.
  • Meranda is through DM, but not the Seal of Wrynn (I think). Gear and enchants yet to come.
  • Tristar is through DM, but not the Seal of Wrynn. Gear and enchants yet to come.
  • Bobnotbob is through DM, but not the Seal of Wrynn. Gear and enchants yet to come.
  • Morlo is ready for DM.
  • Corandra, Turbulent, and Shadowpeeg are not ready for DM yet.
  • All other toons are nascent at best.
So what's ahead of us? Here's what I see on the checklist:

  • A handful of DM runs.
  • A handful of Stockades runs to kill Basil Threadd.
  • A handful of helping finish the Wrynn quest (you have to kill several 30s to wrap it up).
  • Helping Turbulence get to 300 enchanting. I'd like to get him all of the +Sta, +Int and +AGI buff available, and though it will be ridiculously expensive, the ability to do a Lifestealing enchant.
  • For the AH players, any reasonable price (less than 50g) Sentry Cloak shouldn't be passed up. I have a boatload of gear in Shadowpeeg's bank - if you're ready to gear up, let me know and we'll start disbursing.
  • Continued SFK and BFD runs for good stuff.
I know this all reads as work, but it's still a game for me. It's just a game with a lot of preparation, which I find fun. Game within a game, and all that. Keep on SMASHing!
